Castle Rock High School

McVeigh SIPs were selected by Main Contractors Wilmott Dixon to Design, Supply and Install the Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) at Castle Rock, the first of 4 new high schools to be constructed for Leicestershire County Council. The new 600 place high school was constructed using a Glulam timber frame and SIPs forming the external walls and roof.

150mm thick panels were used for the walls and 180mm thick panels were used on the roof providing a very thermally efficient building. All the secondary trimmer members and purlins were stripped away from the structural frame due to the long spanning capabilities of the SIPs which resulted in clean flat finishes internally and substantial cost savings.

Following the successful completion of Castle Rock High School the subsequent Schools have been built utilizing SIPs by McVeigh SIPs.

Key Successes

  • Fully intergrated SIPs walls and roof system easing the thermal continuity and air sealing details.
  • Long spanning elements reducing the requirement of secondary support members.
  • Easy integration of the timber based SIPs with a Glulam structural frame.
  • UK Manufactured product keeping transport costs and environmental impact minimal.
  • Repeat Business.
